Getting laser hair removal for the first time? Knowing what to do before and after your session can significantly improve your results — and protect your skin. Here's everything you need to know.
Before Your Session — What To Do
- Shave the treatment area (don't wax or pluck — the follicle needs to be intact)
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds
- Apply SPF 30+ if going outdoors
- Arrive with clean, product-free skin
- Avoid applying deodorant to underarm areas
- Remove any fake tan or self-tanner
- Waxing, threading, or epilating (these remove the follicle the laser targets)
- Sunbathing or sunbeds
- Strong retinol or AHA/BHA products
During Your Session
- A gentle, warm sensation — not pain
- The handpiece gliding smoothly across your skin
- A cooling tip protecting your skin throughout
- A session lasting 15–45 minutes depending on the area
After Your Session — What To Do
- Apply a cooling gel or aloe vera if the skin feels warm
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, or steam rooms for 24 hours
- Don't apply perfume or deodorant to treated areas for 24 hours
- Apply SPF 30+ to any treated areas exposed to sunlight
- Avoid strenuous exercise (perspiration can irritate the skin)
- Avoid active skincare products (retinol, acids)
- You may notice hair "shedding" from the treated area — this is normal and a sign the treatment is working
- Gently exfoliate 1 week post-treatment to help hair shed
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌Waxing between sessions — always shave, never wax
- ❌Missing sun protection — UV exposure after laser can cause pigmentation
- ❌Skipping sessions — consistency produces dramatically better results
- ❌Expecting instant results — hair reduction builds progressively over multiple sessions
